Future of Democracy in Latin America, Belem, Brazil, May 2008

The IISC's assistant director, Dr Stephen Wilkinson, was invited to Belem, capital of the Brazilian Amazonian state of Pará on May 29-30, 2008 for a conference organised by the local government in conjunciton with the newspaper Le Monde Dipolomatique.

The conference entitled: 'The Future of Democracy in Latin America: Social movements, political movements' was attended by over three hundred people.

Among the other speakers were the British historian Richard Gott, Ignacio Ramonet, the director of Le Monde Diplomatique and Aurelio Alonso from the Casa de las Americas in Cuba.

There were also high profile speakers from the Mexican senate, the Brazilian, Bolivian and Argentine parliaments as well as a representative of the newly elected President of Paraguay.

Dr Wilkinson (pictured above) spoke on a panel entitled 'Cuba: From the Special Period to the election of Raúl'
