This tour has been designed and will be led by Dr Manuel Barcia
who is a Lecturer in Latin American Studies in Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies University of Leeds.

Monday 29 June Cuba history and economy
AM: Visit to the Instituto Nacional de Historia (National History Institute). Introductory talk about history of Cuba. Dr Ricardo Quiza.
Lunch
PM: Visit to the Archivo Nacional de Cuba. Talk by Deputy Director Lic. Jorge Macle and brief research time browsing through original documents related to the Africans and their descendants in Cuba.

Tuesday 30 June: African Slavery in Cuba
AM: Casa de Africa (House of Africa) Museum of the City. Lecture on African
Slavery in Cuba. Lic. Alberto Granados, Director.
Lunch
PM: Guided tour of Old Havana with expert from the City Historian 's office, highlighting places related to the history of the slave trade and slavery in the city.
Evening: Cañonazo ceremony (9pm), La Cabaña Fortress.

Wednesday 1 July: African cultures and religions in today's Cuba
AM: Visit to the Yoruba Society House in Havana. Lecture about African
religions in today's Cuba
Lunch
PM: Transfer to Guanabacoa/Regla to participate of a Yoruba religious
ceremony.

Thursday 2 July: Archaeology of African Slavery
AM and PM: Transfer to the coffee plantation El Padre in Madruga, south of
Havana, where extensive archaeological work has been done on the ancient
plantation slave barracks. Lunch
Talk on the archaeology of African slavery in Cuba. Lic. Lissette Roura,
Archaeologist at the Gabinete de Arqueologia (Havana).
Evening: Tour of Old Havana historical centre.

Friday 3 July: African History and Tourism
AM: Transfer to Matanzas. Check in to Canimao Hotel.
Lunch
PM: Guided tour of sugar and coffee plantations (Triumvirato, Alcancia) and
visit to Jovellanos (meeting there with leaders of an African Cabildo). Lic.
Silvia Hernandez, Heritage Office, Matanzas.
Dinner in hotel

Saturday 6 July: Conclusions
AM: Guided tour of the Museum of Slavery in Matanzas. Lic. Isabel Hernandez,
Director. Lunch
PM: Visit to Varadero beach
Evening: Dinner and Salsa night!

Sunday 7 July: Return
AM: Transfer to Havana.
PM: Flight home.

* This price is based on a minimum of 6 persons travelling (plus Dr Barcia). If the group exceeds 10 there will be a discount.
