Following the success of the 2007 London Metropolitan study tour to Cuba, the International Institute for the Study of Cuba organised another itinerary in 2008.
This tour was organised in conjunction with Old Havana Ltd.
The tour was arranged for students and staff at London Metropolitan University but particpants from other institutions also came along.
It was accompanied by Dr Stephen Wilkinson, Assistant Director of the IISC.
Here is what participants said about the experience:
Absolutely Fantastic. One of the best holidays I've had...
All credit to you and your team (including Antonio and the staff at Old Havana Ltd ) for organizing a well structured and most interesting itinerary. This experience has given me a better understanding of the political, economical and social situations
faced by Cubans, as well as an appreciation of the communist regime.
The experience was both an educational and cultural enlightenment, which has opened my mind to the bigger picture and given me a better understanding. As a result I have learnt not to rely on the media portrayal of world events.
Since being back, I have recommended the "Cuban Study Tour" to all my
colleagues who have enquired.
Vannetta Cayenne, Staff member at London Met.
Mesmerising! 'The Cuban Study Tour' was simply amazing.
Steve and all the staff at Old Havana Ltd. really made an effort to introduce another side of Cuba.
All the lectures gave me an insight into the achievements of the Cuban revolution, and problems that the country will face in the future. Understanding the Cuban economy was particularly interesting, particularly at a time when the world is experiencing a global economic crisis.
I would definitely recommend the tour for everyone. All of us have something to learn from Cuba!
Suzana Koder, Economics undergraduate
I benefitted so much on several different levels from travelling to
Cuba and participating in the tour. I now have first hand experience of
Cuba which was a very profound personal experience. Additionally, the
study tour provided an in-depth understanding as well as an enrichment
of information that will be exceptionally useful as rich data analysis
for my research study on Cuba and also for writing up my dissertation.
Muchas gracias!
