Forthcoming public seminars

The Spring 2009 season of public seminars at the IISC starts on 5th February with the launch of the book by Dr Tom Carter: Cuban Baseball and National Identity: A nation of Peloteros.

This tour has been designed and will be led by Dr Manuel Barcia who is a Lecturer in Latin American Studies in Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at the University of Leeds.

The Cuba specialist travel firm Old Havana Ltd. which trades as San Cristobal UK has signed an agreement with the IISC to supply discounted travel services to Cuba for the IISC and its clients and associates. The IISC panel at the annual Society for Latin American Studies Conference in Leeds in March 2009 is already full. Eight participants from as far afield as Cuba, the USA, Canada, France, Wales and the UK will be discussing the work of the Cuban Detective author Leonardo Padura Fuentes.

Cuba 50 Years of Revolution conference in Havana and Nottingham
The Cuba Research Forum at Nottingham University is holding a double conference in 2009 to mark both the 50th anniversary of the Revolution and the 12th anniversary of the founding of the Forum. Members of the IISC will be participating. For more information click here.

2009 marks the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.  The Journal of Iberian and Latin American Research, published by the Association of Iberian and Latin American Studies of Australasia (AILASA) is preparing a special issue, to appear in December 2009.

In October, Hurricane Paloma hit Cuba. This was the third hurricane to hit the island in a year. The IISC suggests that those who wish to make a donation to alleviate some of the problems should do so through the organization MEDICC.
