  London Metropolitan University to open office in Havana
   

London Metropolitan University is to have an office in Havana to coordinate and develop its work in Cuba, following the signing of a formal agreement in Havana on Friday 15 February.
London Met Vice-Chancellor Brian Roper and the Rector of Havana University Dr Rubén Zardoya Loureda (pictured)signed the agreement at a special session held during the Universidad 2008 conference in Havana.
The Universidad 2008 conference held at the Palacio de Convenciones in Havana from 11-15 February attracted more than 3,000 delegates from all over the world, but LondonMet had the biggest delegation from the developed world with 23 participants.

Next seminar: Cuban film March 12

   

The UK’s leading expert on Cuban Cinema, Professor Michael Chanan (pictured) of Roehampton University is the next guest speaker in the ISC seminar series. Prof. Chana will be discussing Screen memory in the revolutionary cinema.

Medical Study Tour 15 June





There is still time to sign up to the first IISC study tour for Medical and primary health professionals that departs on 15 June 2008. The programme comprises a week of visits and seminars looking at all aspects of Cuban medical care, including the system, its ethos, treatment regimes, institutions, research and facilities. The tour will be led by IISC Director Professor Patrick Pietroni. Full details and the cost of participation in posted our website.

IISC arranges for LondonMet specialist to teach in Cuba

Dr Christine Nunn (pictured), an expert in bioinformatics from LondonMet’s Department of Health and Human Sciences is to go to Havana in June to help train Cuban biochemistry PhDs. Dr Nunn will spend two weeks at the world famous CNIC Cuban Centre of Scientific Investigation from June 8-22 this year. The programme has been organised through the IISC at the request of CNIC.

Fidel the morning after: IISC coverage of Castro resignation

 
     


The IISC Assistant Director, Dr Stephen Wilkinson, appeared on TV and radio nine times on February 19 to comment on the announcement of Fidel Castro's resignation from the presidency. He gave interviews to BBC World, BBC News 24, BBC 1, Sky News, The Press Association, Irish TV, The Guardian, Fox TV, CNN and the BBC World service among other media outlets.

180 people attend seminar on Venezuela

   



More than 180 people attended the second of our 2008 series of public seminars on 6th February. Emily Morris (pictured) of the Economist Intelligence Unit and Dr Julia Buxton from the University of Bradford examined the growing relationship between Cuba and Venezuela.
