Cuban health policy: Challenges at home, outreach abroad

Speakers: Professor Patrick Pietroni and Professor Margaret Blunden, International Institute for the Study of Cuba, London Metropolitan University

The Cuban health care system is widely recognised throughout the world, but the controversy surrounding its portrayal in the film ‘Sicko’ by Michael Moore and recent revelations about its failings in the Cuban media have raised questions as to whether it really does deliver the quality of care that is assumed. Meanwhile, Cuba’s outreach to other developing countries appears to be growing to new levels. This seminar examines the current status of Cuba’s health care system at home and the radical nature of its overseas medical aid programme.

Professor Patrick Pietroni, was Dean of General Practice at the University of London. He is now the Director of the International Institute for the Study of Cuba. He has written extensively on Cuba’s health care system and recently returned from a study visit to the Ministry of Health.

Professor Margaret Blunden is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Westminster. She was formerly Deputy Vice-Chancellor for External Affairs and Provost of the Regent Campus. She has published widely in the fields of International Relations and Security Studies. She is curreently working on a research project into the efficacy of Cuba’s medical training programme in sub-saharan Africa.

Dr Julia Buxton is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for International Cooperation and Security at the University of Bradford. She was visiting professor at the Centre for Latin American Studies, Edmund A Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington for the Spring semester 2007.
